On August 16, 2010, the Co-Prosecutors of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia ("ECCC") filed a Notice of Appeal against the Trial Chamber's judgment convicting Kaing Guek Eav ("Duch") of crimes against humanity and numerous breaches of the Geneva Conventions and sentencing him to thirty-five years' imprisonment, reduced to nineteen years on account of mitigating factors. This Notice of Appeal was filed in accordance with the Internal Rules under ECCC law, whereby a party appealing a judgment of the Trial Chamber must file a "notice of appeal" within thirty days of the judgment having been rendered, specifying the alleged errors of law and fact that either invalidate the decision or result in a miscarriage of justice. The Notice of Appeal was followed by the appeal brief detailing the grounds of appeal on October 13, 2010.
