Coccidiosis in poultry is ofgreat economic significanceto the poultry industry sinceit is one of the most importantcomplicating factors involved in gutproblems. It is caused by a protozoan parasite belonging to the genus Eimeria.Chickens can be infected by sevendifferent species and turkeys byseven other species that do notinfect chickens. The most important species forbroilers are E. tenella (blood in faeces), E. acervulina (white ladder-likelesions in first part of intestines), E.maxima (red pin-point like lesionsin the midgut) and E. mitis (no typical lesions). For older chickens, two morespecies are important - E. necatrixand E. brunetti.
