The first part of the article overviews backup options for ropeways, particularly in the stations, with the focus on unidirectional monocable ropeways. The range of available backup options is limited as the systems are reliable, and most faults can be quickly rectified. Attention should be given to backup options that permit reduced operation for the transportation of the passengers to a station in order to avoid the need for rescue operations. The backup options for the various drive configurations will be reviewed and analyzed in the second part of the article.
