The architects of downtown Chattanooga's waterfront plan say they raised the transportation bar when an inclined elevator was made part of the project's blueprint. "Chattanooga has a history of doing things to think outside the box. Clearly, this is one case in which we've done just that," says Ken Hays, who heads the downtown development group RiverCity Co. The Crosslift helps to move people from the Tennessee Aquarium area, up the hill on First Street, towards the Bluff View Art Museum and became part of the city's USD 120 million waterfront plan. First Street area is slated to become a mixed-use neighborhood with residences and shops. Operated by push buttons, the Crosslift runs much like a vertical elevator, just on an inclination and with a great view for the whole ride. The panorama cabin is equipped with all the features of a vertical elevator plus heating and air conditioning in order to ensure a comfortable ride.
