Shortly after Australia was established as a British penal colony in the late 1700s, it began receiving convicts transported from the United Kingdom. As work was considered an essential part of the rehabilitation process, the early farms in Australiawere developed with inmate labour. Gradually, farm production became a cornerstone of the Australian economy, and today over half of the country's agricultural output is shipped abroad, making Australia one of the world's top exporters of produce and livestock.
