US Senate Democrats decided on Tuesday to postpone an initial vote on a far-reaching set of offshore oil and gas reforms until mid-September at the earliest. Meanwhile, several moderate Democrats and Republicans were working to tone down language that would expose companies to unlimited liability for oil spills. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has proposed abolishing the existing $75 million cap on claims for economic damage that can be brought against a firm found responsible for an oil spill.
