Effect of Substratum Size on the Yield of Oyster Mushrooms on Cotton Plant Stalks

Three species of oyster mushrooms, viz., Pleurotussa.jor-caju,P.flahella.tus and P. florida were grown on cotton plant stalks with and without nutrient supplementation on different sized substrata. One kg of the substratum was found to be better during both ideal and slightly adverse conditons in Bombay with regard to the yield of the sporophores whereas 5 kg substratum was found to be better under only ideal conditions. P.sajor-caju yielded about 500 g of fleshy fruiting bodies per kg of material and the yield was about 800 g when the stalks were supplemented with bengalgram flour @3. The results on the other two species were also same on 1kg substratum, without nutrient supplementation.
