The US government on Friday imposed tougher fuel efficiency standards for passenger cars, sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks beginning with model year 2011 vehicles. The regulation is an abbreviated version of the initiative launched by Congress and the Bush administration in 2007 to reduce US dependence on imported oil and cut tailpipe emissions. It also comes at a time of deep uncertainty about the future of domestic auto manufacturers General Motors, Ford Motor and Chrysler.
