At the University of Southampton, chemical crystallographyresearch (Mike Hursthouse, Simon Coles, Thomas Gelbrich, MarkLight) focuses on structural systematics of families of functionalisedorganic compounds in order to gain insights into crystal assembly,to develop understanding of phenomena such as polymorphism andstructural similarity, and to inform work on crystal structure pre-diction. Typical analyses consider matrices of related structures (of-ten of the order of 100) by systematic approaches embodied in thegroup's XPac software package, which has been developed to pro-vide an automated gauge of crystal structure similarity. The work issupported by a laboratory specifically developed to examine physi-cal and thermal properties of crystalline solids in order to investigatestructure-property relationships and structural transformations. Thegroup is active in the areas of e-science and informatics, developingnew approaches to open access publication of crystallographic data(and other analytical data), as well as remote control experiments andsystems for data management and experimental analysis.
