Maria Przybylska (maid-en name Kolasa) passed awaypeacefully on October 8, 2008in Ottawa, Canada. She wasborn on March 2, 1923 in War-saw, Poland. Having narrowlyescaped Poland with her fatherand brother just ahead of theGerman and Russian invasionof 1939, she made her way toScotland. She studied chemistryat the University of Glasgow andher passion was to study biolog-ically relevant molecules. After she attended a lecture by John Monteith Robertson on the applica-tion of X-ray crystallographic methods to determine structures oforganic molecules she was inspired to pursue graduate work withRobertson. She determined the structure of quinol dimethyl etherwith only a slide rule to perform the inverse Fourier transforms.
