Regular science writer Bill Dyck brings news of a new plan of attack against an old foe of Australasian softwood growers - dothistroma needle blight. and the apparent cause is "unprecedented climate change". Dothistroma is causing mass mortality of lodgepoie pine in northern British Columbia and is on the march in Europe, where it is also known as red band. Warmer and wetter winters in northern BC are thought to be responsible for the extra virulence of the native fungus. Ironically, Corsican pine -planted in the UK largely because it was predicted to grow well as the climate of the region's 'warmed' climate has been one of the worst affected.
