摘要

It Is fair to say the Japanese log market 'ain't what it used to be' - and, potentially, that translates to good news for radiata pine exporters, existing on a China-only diet. According to international wood products watcher Wood Resources Quarterly(WRQ), New Zealand and North American log exporters will be the major beneficiaries of a huge fall-off in Russian timber imports, at a time when Japanese housing starts are about to improve. Despite its long-running economic travails, Japan is still theworld's second largest log importer after China. Although the log component has dropped to 40% of 1998 volumes, the country's total forest products imports have been largely unchanged for a decade. Russian wood dominated the import figures for 15 years, peaking at 55% in 2006. Since then it has all been downhill, with the Russians cranking up their prices and their market share dropping to 17% by early 2009 as a consequence.
