Child abuse continues to represent a significant cause of childhood morbidity and mortality in the United States. In 2002, it is estimated that some 896,000 children were the victims of child abuse or neglect. This equates to a rate of victimization of 12.3/1000 children. Unfortunately, many of these cases go unreported and sadly, more than 10% of traumatic injuries in children are nonaccidental.Shaken baby syndrome (SBS) is one form of such child abuse with devastating consequences. SBS has been identified by other names such as abusive head trauma, shaken brain trauma, pediatric traumatic brain injury, whiplash shaken infant syndrome, and shaken impact syndrome. This review will discuss specifically the SBS as it relates to ophthalmologic findings and consequences.
