摘要

Toxocara is a species of roundworm for which the definitive hosts are the common dog (Toxocara canis) and cat (Toxocara cati). Humans are infected through ingestion of eggs in contaminated soil by geophagia (the consumption of soil, a subset of pica), fecal-oral transmission or through food products. Larvae hatch and burgeon in the small intestine then migrate to tissues, most notably the lungs, muscle, and eyes. Toxocara infection in humans has been termed an "accidental zoonosis" as larvae resident in human tissue never develop into adult organisms capable of reproduction.1 Although the overall seroprevalence of Toxocara antibodies is high-13.9% in United States, and ranging from 3.7% to 39% in Brazil-symptomatic Toxocara infection is comparatively rare.
