The Australian rice industry is a market-oriented and efficient industry. As Australia exports 80 to 85 percent of its annual rice production, it has a heavy exposure to the world market. Rice production (including medium and long grain varieties) iscentred solely in the State of New South Wales. The limited production of long grain rice in Queensland ceased in 1993. The Australian rice industry was established commercially in 1924 in New South Wales, but rice has only been grown experimentally in Australia since 1982. These experiments, which concentrated on dryland rice, were not successful, and all rice in Australia is now grown under irrigation.
