Frire and risk engineering consultancy is in a new phase, which could be defined as 'post 9/11 and 7/7', which requires us to free our thinking and realise the opportunities for value that combined architectural and engineering specialists can produce. The UK has been leading fire engineering for 25 years, through the work of important fire scientists and engineers. This has enabled development of fire regulations and risk concepts which give scope for imaginative, engineering-based design, rather than adherence to codes which often quote arbitrary numbers which have no technical basis. Our leadership of the fire engineering community internationally has resulted in UK fire engineers being responsible for fire safety design of many major buildings, internationally, and being instrumental in the development of performance-based codes for other nations: for example, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong; and our risk informed approach has now an important facet of some US NFPA codes.
