Scientific meetings take place all the time. Some of them are good, some not so good. All too often they are hurriedly convened, inefficiently managed, and ineffectively reported. And almost always they cost too much. Even the good ones usually run out of time before they can produce anything concrete. In the case of a meeting with the long-winded and unimportant-sounding title of The DFID PSP-ICRISAT Meeting-cum-Training Course on the Use of Molecular Markers for Pearl Millet Improvement in Developing Countries, held in Hyderabad, India, from 18 to 21 November 1997, the participants had everything going against them. In addition to the dreary title, time was short, the agenda was heavy, and the hosting agency had a scheduling conflict. Despite theodds, however, the meeting turned out to be a scientific watershed.
