In spite of a strong rebound in Q4 2012, total seaborne export volumes grew only modestly in 2012, partly as a result of languishing Brazilian output. Robust growth from Australia, however, has kept the y/y change in positive territory. Indian exports continued to fall in H2 2012 as a mining ban was enforced in the key exporting state of Goa. Shipments from India fell 50% y/y in 2012, allowing South Africa to become the third largest global ore exporter. Looking ahead, we expect China to increasingly depend on imports as new, relatively low cost projects are realised elsewhere. The CAGR from 2012 to 2016 for total seaborne imports is forecast to be 6%, compared to 4% for total iron ore demand.
