The leaching action of rainfall on saline soil cultivated with turnip-tops (cv. Novantina) was tested. The results obtained show that the rainfall pattern observed through the turnip-top cropping cycle caused significant drainage in November and December producing the leaching of over 70% of soil solutes, when the crop was still in the early growth stages. Based on the crop determinations aimed to assess, in two specified periods of the cycle, the leaf water status, through the measure of the relative water content (RWC) and the photosynthesis electron transport efficiency (PHIPSII), no significant differences were shown by the chlorophyll fluorescence analysis between the crops grown in soils previously brought to different salinity levels. Similar results were obtained for inflorescence and biomass yields per plant.
