Appropriately enough in this centenary year of vertical flight, the rotorcraft industry is enjoying historically high sales, and strong market growth has become the norm (see box). After a period of shrinking or stagnant markets from the mid-1990s through to the early years of the present decade, one of the primary challenges facing manufacturers these days is ramping up in an orderly manner to keep pace with accelerating production commitments. Today, a commercial customer often has to wait 18-24 months to take delivery of a new helicopter, but the industry is reluctant to add capacity, since the forecasts indicate the market flattening out or declining slightly towards the end of the decade.
