Service companies have developed new technologies that can result in multiple frac stages, fewer production-constraining issues, and optimal fracture staging. Several case studies highlight recent technological advances as they have been applied in the field. Baker Hughes has developed frac balls that are lighter and stronger than conventional frac balls (made of phenolic or fiberglass resin material), providing several advantages to the completion process. But what may turn out to be a game changer is that the company's new IN-Tallic frac balls disintegrate when exposed to brine fluids or acid solutions. This feature eliminates the risk of balls not being produced back to surface or remaining on corresponding seats, which could result in lost production. Additionally, the rate of disintegration can be controlled.
