John Buchan's celebrated adventure novel The 39 Steps might well have inspired Paul Barton to compile a personal selection of thirty nine of the most exciting and contemporary staircase designs from around the world. Fundamentally, architecture is an art that is geometrical in nature. Architects and engineers seek to resolve the real purpose of any staircase (to convey people in safety on a route through multi-level buildings) on structures that, hopefully, impress building owners and users, are frequently innovative and often have a dramatic visual impact.
