ExxonMobil still plans to start oil production from the US 2.6 Bn Cepu development in Java by 2008 - but said initial output rates will be lower as a result of development problems. In March, Indonesia's Pertamina and ExxonMobil signed a joint operation deal for Cepu after five years of arguing and delays. This boosted hopes of a fast track development by 2008 that would also stem Indonesia's dwindling oil production. Jakarta approved the Cepu development plan but an official at energy sector watchdog BP Migas said some problems have arisen since then, including land clearing, which could delay the start of production to 2009.
