Our point-wise reply to Kirchner's comments is as follows: 1. The use of interpolated time series in our study has not overlooked previous work [1] showing that interpolation can introduce significant artifactual correlation. We have used the interpolated data to bring home the fact that the interpolated time series loses the actual property of the original data due to smoothing, which can introduce significant artifactual correlation. This we have proved in our text by carrying out linear plots (figures 3a and 4a [1]) and randomization tests following [2]. Further, we have cited the work of Kirchner and Weil (reference 5 in [1]) while the other references cited by him (references 7-9 of comments) were either not available to us or have no relevance to our study.
