This volume on beryllium may be considered a companion to the larger Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry volume on boron (v.33), also edited by Edward Grew together with Larry Anovitz. The editor's rationale for the beryllium volume is similar to that for the boron volume. Both B and Be have posed analytical difficulties, leading to relative neglect by geochemists and mineralogists in the past. Recent analytical advances, coupled with interest in beryllium in petrology, mineralogy, environmental geochemistry, and economic geology, have resulted in renewed research activity on this light metal. From the standpoint of economic geology, beryllium is a metal of strategic importance, finding use in nuclear reactors, ceramics, and a variety of alloys with copper, aluminum, etc. However, there is relatively little exploration activity for Be ores at the present time owing to the existence of plentiful resources of the metal at the Spor Mountain deposit in Utah. On the other hand, new sources of Be-bearing gemstones such as emerald, aquamarine, and chrysoberyl will always be sought.
