FORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL policy re-searcher John Nelson, together with Cheri Burda, Jean Kavanagh and Bill Wareham of the David Suzuki Foundation, and Andrea Reimer of the Western Canada Wilderness Committee has put together a hard hitting report on the sad state of affairs surrounding BC's official tree the Western red cedar (Thuja plicata). The high commercial value of this stately and noble conifer in its old growth form has helped support the increasingly beleaguered coastal logging industry over the past twenty years as easily accessible old growth has become scarcer and logging costs more and more expensive.
