TiO_2 nanotube arrays (TiO_2 NTs) sensitized with Ag@Ag_2S core-shell nanoparticles were successfully fabricated using the successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) technique to deposit Ag nanoparticles on TiO_2 NTs, combined with a subsequent sulfurization treatment at room temperature. The structural investigation by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicate that the Ag @ Ag_2 S core-shell nanoparticles grow uniformly on the walls of the TiO_2 NTs. The TiO_2 NTs/Ag@ Ag_2S exhibit more excellent photoelectrochemical properties and photocatalytic activities than those of TiO_2 NTs and TiO_2 NTs/Ag under visible light irradiation. The excellent activities are attributed to the synergistic effect between Ag, Ag_2S and TiO_2 NTs.
