Despite 30 percent increase in steel prices in the last four months, industry players might go in for another round of price hike in August, thanks to the continuous increase in prices of raw material that is putting their margins under pressure. 'After the government intervention in May, major steel producers have rolled-back the prices by 4,000 rupees a tonne. This further brought down the steel prices in India to as low as Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 vis-a-vis international prices. However, the current price scenario is not sustainable as there has been an unprecedented increase in prices of raw materials, ocean freights have touched an all-time high and the robust demand for steel, especially from Bric nations, is fuelling the steel prices across the globe," says B Muthuraman, managing director, Tata Steel. Muthuraman was speaking at the Indian Steel Conclave 2008, organized by Ficci and the ministry of steel.
