It's not that programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are a disappearing act. In the mid-1960s the original PLC company, Modicon, revolutionised electrical controls by replacing relays with a 'programmable box', and now newer programming methods - in combination with industrial computers (IPCs) and the availability of industrial buses - are beginning to take over some tasks performed by PLCs.
