If you're looking for some extra motivation to jumpstart your wellness program in the new year, this might be it: A NIOSH-supported study in the journal Obesity suggests that health care costs rise in tandem with body-mass measurements. Duke Medicine researchers found that the costs associated with medical and drug claims gradually rose with each unit increase in body-mass index, or BMI. Notably, the increases began above a BMI of 19, which falls in the lower range of the healthy BMI category.
