THE OBJECTIVE of this study is to assess the rain fed natural resources of Marsa Matrouh area by integrating Remote Sensing (RS). Geographic Information System (GIS) and hydrological modeling methodologies.The study revealed that the elevation ranged between -2 to 232 meters above sea level (ASL) at the Matrouh area. It comprises 28 watersheds with areas range between 200 hectares to 22600 hectares with a total of 180700 hectares. The bare and range land comprise 59% and 27% from the total area respectively. Cereals and trees-wadis areas are 8% anti 2% from the total area, respectively. The Ramla watershed area is 22587 hectares. The range and bare land of the Ramla watershed area are 43% and 32%, respectively. Cereals areas and trees-wadis areas of the Ramla watershed area are 14% and 3% respectively. It is comprises 235 sub basins at 2500 m stream length with drainage areas range between 10 to 246 hectares. At 150mm rainfall the runoff volume is 0.8 m(3) and ranged between 0.3, 0.3 and 0.2 m(3) at north, middle and south, respectively. At 250 mm rainfall the runoff volume is 2.3 m(3) and ranged between 1.4 m(3), 0.5 m(3) and 0.3 m(3) at north, middle and south, respectively. 21 potential cisterns out off 93 per sub basin for runoff water harvesting and storage were assessed and their optimal location was identified. Soil erosion hazard areas were identified. Areas for crop and range land improvernent and soil conservation measures are proposed.The methodology of this study could be considered as a ready module for applying at different locations and represents a significant participatory management tool for rain fed agriculture in Egypt.
