Dominion Virginia Power has received approval from the State Corporation Commission to convert three coal plants to biomass facilities, according to the Williamsburg Yorktown Daily News. Dominion will convert its coal-fired power stations in Altavista, Hopewell and Southampton County, Va., into biomassburning facilities as part of a US$165.8 million plan. The plants are identical and went into operation in 1992. If the plan is approved by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the plants could begin burning biomass by 2013.
