The Aluminium Association of India wants the Indian government to impose a 10pc tariff on imports of aluminium in response to a surge in shipments from China and the Middle East. The Aluminium Association of India has met with government officials to push for an increase in the import duty on aluminium to 10pc from the current 5pc. The group joins the European and North American aluminium associations in seeking relief from the torrent of primary aluminium, semifabricated aluminium and aluminium products leaking into the global market primarily from China. The Indian association estimates India’s aluminium demand at 2.83mn t this year. Imports of aluminium in India have risen to 1.56mn t in the 2014-2015 financial year from 0.88mn t in 2010-2011, primarily from the Middle East and China. “Both these locations have a huge capacity overhang,” the association said.
