Ghana's economic growth could top 20% next year, up nearly four times the projected 5.8% rate this year, thanks to the startup of oil production in the offshore Jubilee field. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and some private economists issued this forecast after taking into account Ghana's position as a major producer of gold and as the world's second leading cocoa grower. Both commodities are also set to shine in the coming year, likely making Ghana one of the world's top performing economies in the near future.

7. Commodity prices have risen sharply since 2006. This may benefit developing countries specialized on primary exports, but poverty may increase. Uruguay is a net exporter of primary products and a net importer of oil. With the aim of analyzing the impact of soaring commodity prices and policy options, we apply a CGE model and microsimulations. A rise in food prices has a positive impact on the Uruguayan economy that is partially offset by the increase in oil prices. Even when poorest households’ income rises, their welfare falls because their consumption basket becomes more expensive. Poverty falls but extreme poverty increases.
