Over the last century, rolling has gone in and out of fashion. It was used extensively in the early 1900s as part of regular golf green maintenance, only to become less popular in the 1950s. This was mainly due to concerns of increasing compaction ongreens caused by heavy duty rollers. Since the 1980s, rolling proved popular again as more advanced lightweight rollers were introduced to the turfgrass industry that minimised the effects of compaction on greens. Since then, many turf managers have incorporated the modern lightweight rollers into their maintenance programme as a way to increase green speeds without having to compromise the health of the sward by mowing to dangerously low heights of cut. But with limited research on the subject - many questions are still left unanswered.
