摘要

Hyperglycemia is asymptomatic until the glucose concentration surpasses the renal threshold for reabsorbing glucose, resulting in glucosuria, osmotic diuresis, and dehydration. Diabetes is largely asymptomatic until complications develop. Because of this, nearly one-third of people with diabetes are not aware that they have the disease. This poses a question: if a patient is asymptomatic, then why treat? Diabetes is dangerous because of its complications, which are often present at the time of diagnosis. The rate of some complications can be reduced with appropriate glycemic control, even in an asymptomatic patient.
