The global mining boom has been a welcome development for drive, motor and control-system vendors as producers bring new mines online and expand existing operations-ordering equipment to outfit their new facilities or to replace worn-out items that were kept in service during the previous market downturn. And, true to the concept of the old adage "a rising tide lifts all ships," new equipment orders and emerging technologies often result in higher demand for metals and industrial minerals-at least symbolically if not substantially. Take copper, for example. Several years ago, a copper-industry trade organization published a news release listing the amount of copper contained in the various engine and propulsion systems of the largest haul trucks-the ultra-class, 360- to 400-ton-capacity models from Komatsu, Liebherr and Terex. At the time, each of these electric-wheel-drive units required nearly 2 tons of the red metal for their AC generators and motors alone, along with another ton or more in their radiators. Even Caterpillar's 797 mechanical-drive ultra-class hauler- without wheel motors or electric-drive equipment-contained roughly 2.5 miles of copper wiring and several hundred pounds of copper welding bead.
