Does anyone care about Ukraine anymore? This is the question many Ukrainians are asking now that a rapprochement is slowly taking hold in relations between Russia and the West, as evidenced last week in St. Petersburg at Russia's annual economic forum. Even though EU countries are almost certain to approve a six-month extension of economic sanctions, many European politicians and businessmen are eager to place the era of sanctions behind. The conflict in eastern Ukraine is far away and involves a region that Europeans simply don't care about. And despite a resurgence of violence in recent weeks, there has been no discernable attempt to redraw boundaries. There is also growing disappointment in the glacial pace of crucial Ukrainian reforms. All of the above suggests adjustments in Western policy toward the two-year-old standoff could be on the way.
