Collahuasi is the world's fourth-largest copper mine and certainly one of the highest surface mines of its size anywhere, perched more than 14,000 feet above sea level. Situated in the high Chilean Altiplano region a few miles west of the Bolivian border and fringed by a chain of volcanic peaks, the mine successfully operates in a fragile yet hostile environment, where the weather can be fierce. Annual precipitation only amounts to 6 inches or less, temperatures drop below freezing at night year-round, and the air is 40 percent thinner than at sea level. In this setting, the stress on workers and machinery is constant and maximum efficiency in operations is essential.The mine, owned by Falconbridge Ltd. (44 percent), Anglo American plc (44 percent), and a Japanese consortium led by Mitsui & Co. (12 percent) and operated by Compania Minera Dona Ines de Collahuasi SCM (CMDIC), produced 453,000 metric tons (mt) of copper from 25 million mt of sulphide ore and 4.7 million mt of oxide ore, grading 1.76 percent copper and 1.53 percent, respectively, during 2001. Proven and probable reserves are reported at 321.5 million mt, grading 1.05 percent copper; and 1.546 billion mt, grading 0.90, respectively. Total mineral resources are in excess of 3 billion mt, enough to support a potential mine life of 50 years. As one of Collahuasi's mine engineers noted during E&MJ's visit, "When we talk about 'long-term planning' here, the time frame begins at 25 years."
