Exploration geologists need to know what mineralized materials can be economically processed to produce a saleable product. Otherwise, how can exploration objectives be established? Extractive metallurgists need a thorough understanding of the geologic characteristics of materials to be handled at individual minerals processing plants. Otherwise, how can efficient and effective processing plants be designed? With these basic minerals industry constraints in mind, the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) is in the early stages of establishing a program in geometallurgy to facilitate cross-disciplinary communication and collaboration between exploration geologists and extractive metallurgists. The long-term objective of the program is to create conditions for more productive and cost-efficient work in both of these indispensable minerals-industry disciplines.
