Yamana Gold in the past six months has acquired a producing gold mine in eastern Brazil and begun construction at second property in central Brazil, where production is planned to begin in mid-2004. When both mines are fully on-stream in the third quarter of 2004, the Toronto-based company expects them to produce a combined total of 137,000 ounces of gold per year. Yamana also is pursuing two advanced-stage gold exploration projects in western Brazil. Yamana purchased the Fazenda Brasileiro gold mine in Bahia state from CVRD, Brazil's largest mining company, and took control of operations on Aug. 16, 2003. By early November, the company was able to report that it had achieved improvements in production and decreases in cash costs through increased underground development, rationalization of services, operational improvements, and reduction of contractor services. Cash costs per ounce of gold were expected to below 200 dollars per ounce by Yamana's fiscal year-end of Feb. 28, 2004, and the mine was on track to exceed its planned production rate of 100,000 ounces of gold per year.
