Under a recently formed partnership agreement, affiliates of First Reserve Corp, and American Metals and Coal International, Inc. (AMCI) have acquired a 19 percent shareholding in OKD, the Czech Republic's leading black coal mining company, from RPG, Going forward, RPG, First Reserve and AMCI intend to jointly review and invest in energy-related businesses in Central and Eastern Europe. OKD is the Czech Republic's leading black coal mining and coke producing company. Headquartered in the Northern Moravian town of Ostrava, close to the Polish border, the company produces more than 12 million metric tons per year (mtpy) of high-Btu, low sulphur coal, which is used both for power generation and as a raw material for steel production. In addition to black coal mining, OKD produces approximately 2 million mt of coke used for steel production, operates regional transportation and logistics assets. In 2004, OKD reported consolidated revenues of approximately 54 billion Czech crowns (1.7 billion US dollars).
