Pumping Progress: new models, materials and methods enhance efficiency

The fact that Gould Pumps, a subsidiary of ITT, shipped the one-millionth ANSI Process Pump in April some 45 years after launching the model seems to confirm that pumps and piping fundamentals haven't changed much. Nevertheless, new materials for pumps and electronic technology have created multiple, incremental improvements. And design, supply and maintenance practices now involve a variety of entities and new as well as established tools for solving both routine and unique pumping problems encountered at various mine and plant sites. As an example, another ITT pump entity - in this case, Flygt Ireland - recently worked with owner Galmoy Mines to solve a dewatering problem at the Galmoy zinc mine located near Thurles in County Kilkenny. The scope of work Flygt undertook was to design a system for pumping water from the bottom of the G and K production areas of the mine at a rate of 40 to 100 I/sec over a distance of 300 m.
