On August 14, 2006, Xstrata reported that it controlled 92.1 percent of Falconbridge and was moving to consolidate its victory in its bidding war with Inco Ltd. Inco remained the target for unresolved takeover bids from Phelps Dodge and CVRD (see following story). "Xstrata has taken effective control of Falconbridge and both management teams are working closely together to facilitate a smooth and swift integration of the two businesses," Xstrata said. On August 17, Falconbridge CEO Derek Pannell and CFO Steve Douglas resigned, as did all but one member of the Falconbridge board. A new board of Xstrata nominees was formed on the same day. On August 21, former Falconbridge President Aaron Regent left the company and Joe Laezza, former president of Falconbridge's nickel operations, announced his retirement.
