Silver prices started 1995 in a weak state and ended the same way. This year, so far, has been somewhat different. To understand what happened with silver prices in 1995, you have to start at the end of September 1994. Silver prices rose steadily to reach 5.78 dollars on a daily settlement price basis at the end of September 1994. At that point, short selling by a number of market participants began pushing silver prices lower. By January 3, 1995, they had fallen to 4.76 dollars. Prices were pushed even lower during the third quarter, touching 4.41 dollars on March 1. By that point, investor buying had already begun building in the market, including both physical purchases and large positions that were being taken in silver options.
