摘要

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said it will keep the air quality standards on the books concerning long-term sulphur dioxide emissions. But the agency may promulgate additional new standards for short-term sulphur dioxide exposure by winter 1996, according to American Metal Market. The EPA plans to retain the "primary national ambient [atmospheric] air quality standards for sulphur dioxide" and suggested three alternatives that could provide additional protection from exposure to harmful emissions. The current rules "are appropriate for types of problems that would arise from long-term, low-level exposure to sulphur dioxide," Susan Stone, an EPA environmental health scientist, said. New standards could well be adopted to combat "short-term, relatively high-concentration exposure." The long-term rules address annual, three-hour, and 24-hour exposure.
