Three-dimensional (3-D) computer vision systems are being increasingly applied to diverse industrial roles, such as reverse engineering, inspection, and metrology, to define the surface form, dimensions, and location of an object. For example, inthe manufacture of many types of objects it is necessary to define the 3-D surface form of a part from a designer's model created in clay or wood. This process is termed reverse engineering because the part form is eventually entered into a CAD system for production tooling to commence. Using a computer vision system, the collected data must be reconstructed into mathematical surface forms compatible with CAD systems. This article reviews all the constituent phases, including data preprocessing,segmentation, surface reconstruction, and multipatch smoothing. Examples are presented of accurate representations suitable for CAD database integration and computer numerical control (CNC) machine tool path generation. The algorithms have beenimplemented in an interactive 3-D surface modeling program that produces surfaces compatible with current CAD / CAM systems.
