Design and redesign activities for advanced systems are increasingly centered on computer-based simulation and emulation techniques. This article examines the requirements and presents an architecture for an intelligent engineering design supportsystem that will allow the redesign engineer to effectively utilize these tools to evaluate design modifications in complex technological and / or engineering systems. The architecture includes a design modeling language, an intelligent user interface,and knowledge and data capture facilities. A prototype implementation and a system redesign example are presented and discussed.
