Solid free-form fabrication (SFF) is a technique that seeks to manufacture physical objects directly from CAD models to avoid the conventional time consuming and costly manufacturing process. With the aid of CAD models, SFF technologies have beenused successfully to produce plastic, wax, and nylon polycarbonate prototype parts. However, SEF of metal or ceramic materials is still at the early stage of research. This article presents a successful demonstration of SFF from metal powders usinghigh-power laser diodes. It describes the design of the compact desktop SEF apparatus, which has four distinct parts: power system, powder feeder, atmospheric controlled chamber, and laser scan controller. The effects of various control parameters on 5FFparts are also discussed.
