Geometry-based metric formulation and methodology to support virtual design for disassembly

Virtual design for disassembly involves evaluating the ease of disassembling a virtual prototype composed of multiple components. The main goal of designing for disassembly is to design products for disassembly prior to the manufacturing stage.This permits the designer to evaluate design options for disassemblability in a virtual environment before building the physical prototype. Disassembly planning for products has been extensively studied by researchers. However, quantification of the easeor difficulty of disassembly of products has not been addressed. The current research specifically addresses the development of a design for disassembly methodology based on a quantitative assessment (i.e., metrics) of the disassemblability of theproduct. We present a methodology that develops metrics based on the factors to be considered for disassembling a product. While designing a product it is necessary to determine the numerical value of the metric to compare different design solutions forthe ease of disassemblability. In this study the methodology has been applied to the recycling domain, because disassemblability of products is a crucial step in recycling.
